Luis Miguel Valdés is a Cuban printmaker, painter, and
sculptor who has resided in Mexico since 1991. He has always been involved in
the application of new technologies to the visual arts. In 1985, he began
experimenting with digital media and in 1986 founded the Digital Art Department
at the Higher Institute of Art in Havana. From this exploration of new
resources for creation, he held the first digital art exhibition in Cuba in
1987 at the Higher Pedagogical Institute of Pinar del Río. He then won an award
at the UNEAC Salon with the first digital video installation, and in 1989, he
presented the first digital music video, "El Breve Espacio En Que No
Estás" (Pablo Milanés), at the Latin American Film Festival.
He is known for his printmaking workshop, "La siempre
Habana," founded in 2000 in Mexico City by Valdés and Mexican poet
Cuitláhuac Rangel. Its name comes from Valdés' body of work, which for almost
four decades has focused on the theme of Cuban colonial architecture and the
human figure in a long series titled "La Siempre Habana." The project
was initially conceived as a printmaking workshop for the artist's work but has
now become an important center for creation and promotion of printmaking,
gaining recognition in Latin American graphic art. In its early stages, it
gradually integrated renowned artists from Mexico and Cuba, with a multitude of
works created by over 60 artists.
In the work with the evocative title, "Prueba de
Autor" (Author's Proof), the artist merges the renowned faces of two
relevant figures in the visual arts, the "Gitana Tropical" (Tropical
Gypsy) by the Cuban Victor Manuel, and the self-referential figure of the
Mexican Frida Kahlo, titling the piece "Frida Tropical".
