ITEM DESCRIPTION

This is a large handwritten and illuminated vellum Grant of Arms manuscript document in its original leather covered presentation box.

It is the Grant of Arms to JOHN BONNEY DEWHURST of Aireville in the parish of Skipton in West Yorkshire, in the Commission of the Peace.

Names mentioned within the document include:
Sir Albert William Woods
George Edward Cokayne
John Bonny Dewhurst
Henry Duke of Norfolk

It is dated 16th August 1883 at the bottom and is signed by Albert Woods and G.E. Cokayne.

There are two large red wax seals (2 and 3/4 inches dia.) protected inside two separate gilt skippets attached to the bottom of the document.

I was only able to open one to show the seal inside.

The box is black leather mounted with nice embossed borders and gilded embossed VR monograms. The inside is lined with blue paper with a gilt pattern.

This is a genuine Victorian Grant of Arms and it is UNIQUE to this family, they do not make duplicates of these documents. It has the 2 FIVE POUNDS embossed seals at the left hand side of the document.

So this chap John Bonny Dewhurst born 1819 and died in 1904 of Aireville, Skipton if you google this you will come up with a number of really interesting websites relating to his family. DEWHURSTS COTTON - John Dewhurst & Sons Ltd of Belle Vue Mills, Skipton, Yorkshire. Interesting as you read through the really fabulous history of the company the Dewhurst Cotton was known as THE 3 SHELLS BRAND and trade mark of the 3 Scallop Shells ( from this coat of arms of the family ). John Bonney Dewhurst was one of the 5 directors of the company during this time when John got this Grant of Arms. The company went onto to merge with many other Cotton companies creating eventually The English Sewing Cotton Company.

John Bonny Dewhurst bought Aireville Estate, Skipton in 1873 from the Henry Alcock family. The 170 acre Aireville Estate was sold in auction 12 months after John Bonny Dewhurst died. He had a number of children and without spending lots of time researching I have found his daughter Hilda Dewhurst was connected to the Wills cigarette company by marriage.
John Bonny Dewhurst married Francis England and they had 5 sons and 3 daughters.

Aireville Hall is now Skipton Academy.

I would imagine there will be an awful lot of interesting family connections and relations if only I had the time to look. I don't but I am sure some of you do.

A really fabulous original unique document for anyone related to the DEWHUSRT family around the world or for a cotton mill museum or specialist collector alike.

Please see close-up photographs provided for more details and visual confirmation of condition for yourself.
Condition report: Normal signs of age and use wear, mostly on the edges and corners of the presentation box.
The document itself has been nicely protected inside the box. Very few signs of damage.

The document is 21 inch wide x approx. 27 inch long, the two seal skippets hang below on strips.

The presentation box measures approx. 22 inches x 5 and 3/4 inches x 2 and 1/4 inches.

Postage policies:

International overseas buyers please read this first - I use Global Shipping Program - GSP to send items to you.
GSP sorts any paperwork etc. which enables items to get through customs much faster than other delivery company.

I am offering FREE postage to the GSP hub in the UK.
GSP then decide on the cost of shipping, sales tax, and possible other charges etc. - All this information can found on the listing BEFORE bidding or buying.
I have no control over the prices that GSP set.

Unfortunately GSP do open the packages they receive to check the contents and then re-wrap them for the forward journey to you. This has caused some issues in the past so please take my word that I personally wrap all items as best I can to survive the trip, but GSP sometimes do not take as much care as I do when re-wrapping.

The shipping time is usually very quick but as you can appreciate there may be delays for any number of reasons which are out of both mine and your control. Thank you.

I now offer FREE shipping - postage more the majority of my eBay items. You can also arrange to COLLECT your item from my actual antique shop if that is easier for you.

To see ALL my other 7000+ items for sale, please click on VISIT SHOP or see other items. Strangely, both options seem to only give a limited view of what I have to offer, so to see everything I have available, click on Shop by Category which will give you a much better view.

Scale is usually an English 1 penny coin which is 20mm in diameter which is just short of 7/8ths of an inch in diameter, or a universal sized Coke can (330ml).

If you see A/F = a/f in the title or description it means "as found" condition which may have scuffs, scratches and damage. In relation to all my listings it does not mean " about fine ". I have used A/F  for " as found " for 45 years.
