1938 Press Photo W.R. Lovelace wears oxygen mask that he designed aboard plane
Minneapolis, Minnesota - Doctor W. R. Lovelace, Mayo Foundation fellow, wearing an oxygen mask that he designed, aboard the Northwest Airlines plane in which he and six members of the airlines staff. Also equipped with the masks, made a flight from Minneapolis to Los Angeles to test the use of the masks, instead of expensive hermetically sealed cabins, in substratosphere flying. The mask, which fits over the nose, leaves the mouth free for conservation and the pilots' use of radio. Photo measures 6 x 8 inches. Photo Is dated 1938.
