SIGNED and inscribed on first front endpaper by thoracic surgeon (remembered for describing the Churchill-Cope reflex) Edward Delos Churchill (1895-1972) to Dr. Walter Bauer (1898-1963), Jackson Professor of Clinical Medicine at Harvard University and chief of the medical services at Massachusetts General Hospital. Walter Bauer was instrumental in the development of rheumatology as a medical subspecialty, promoting careful clinical observation and description and bringing basic scientists and clinicians together to study the "anatomy, chemical composition, and metabolism of connective tissue" in the laboratory.

Condition is Acceptable; firm binding, no folded or torn pages, title rubbed on spine, boards show general use and wear with residual gum of tape across lower spine and boards, title lacks dust jacket, is ex-libris with accompanying stamps and bookplate from Treadwell Library of Massachusetts General Hospital on inside of front board. Additional surgeon’s bookplate dated ‘2 July 1974’ and ‘Old Hickory Bookshop’ belonging to W. D. Seybold affixed to first front endpaper.
