Original 1863 - 65 Confederate stamp and envelope sent to “Mrs. Emeline Hill” of “Davidson Co. N.C.”. There is a list of family ties. The regiments named are from North Carolina.

In 1863, a “10 Cents” stamp was released bearing the profile of Jefferson Davis in blue. This issue was designed and engraved on steel by John Archer and transferred to either copper plates or steel plates. Many shades of exist for these stamps, ranging from light milky blue and darker blue to shades that tend toward greenish blue and green. There are four similar designs of engraved ten cent stamps. A considerable number of Confederate covers (stamped - addressed envelopes) survived the Civil War and through the many years since they were mailed they have been preserved by historians and collectors alike. The letters themselves were kept by the family but they would sell off the envelopes for the stamp value.

The cover measures 3 1/16” x 5 3/8”. There is a period split on back flap.

The cover will be shipped in a protective sleeve with a dated, hand signed Letter of Authenticity with a photograph of the envelope. All of the artifacts on our site are guaranteed to be original Civil War issue or as stated. Please see our "About”, for more information on the framing and artifacts.
