At the End of the War the US Treasury Department had to dispose of huge stores of captured Confederate supplies. An Original Letter from Treasury Aid J. Knight at New Canton, Dec 25, 1865 to Mr RM Ayer at Bremo Bluff, Virginia, informing Mr Ayer, the Treasury Aid at Bremo Bluff that he is to turn over half of the Confederate leather belonging to the United States Government to the Treasury Agent at New Canton and to keep half of the Confederate leather . The Letter has a second part from Treasury Aid Knight at Bremo Bluff,  Jan 13, 1866  reporting that he has received 50 sides of the leather belonging  to the United States Government  remaining in his possession at the time of Lee's Surrender.
1p 8 x 13" " ink. The reverse of the letter is addressed to "R. Ayers Buckingham, Va".  Comes w infor re New Canton, Buckingham County and nearby Bremo Bluff, in Fluvanna County. The latter was a plantation community of the Cocke Family and during the War served as a refuge for the  Robert E Lee  family. Minor edge wear, small acid free archival repairs on reverse, age stains, lower portion faded but easily readable, Overall VG.
