Inside The Design Lust For the Must

Cartier has a runaway hit with the Must, the youngest and coolest watch to come out of Paris, theres more to the simple aesthetic than meets the eye.

The Must line has been wildly popular since its release in the 1970’s. The Must follows the aesthetic ethos of the first Tank watch that Louis Cartier designed in 1917. The original design was meant to evoke a military combat vehicle seen from overhead – rectilinear and efficient with two brancards creating a tread-like frame for the dial. At the time, the Tank was revolutionary in its repudiation of stereotypically gendered watches. The Tank wasn't for men or for women; it was for anyone who appreciated good design.

The Musts have helped to solidify Cartier as a player in the world of cool-girl timepieces. Does that make them trendy? Maybe so. But what is a trend if not a momentary consensus around something highly likable?

Before cost-cutting measures brought about the widespread use of cheaper quartz movements for many wristwatches, Cartier contracted with watch manufacturers to produce mechanical movements designed to last a lifetime. Using traditional watchmaking practices, these gifted craftsmen gave individual attention to each wristwatch. As a result, Cartier wristwatches with mechanical movements are often more sought after by collectors than their quartz counterparts.

Original Dial: The numberless dial is signed Must De Cartier below ‘12’ along with ‘Swiss’ at the very bottom. This is an original unrestored unique yellow dial. Steel hour and minute hands which have aged over time. Dial has marks commensurate with age and wear not noticeable to the naked eye only under magnification. Please observe photographs carefully.

Original Crystal: Good condition.

Original Movement: Cartier went to considerable trouble and expense to ensure its small Calibre series movements performed equally as well as its larger gents movements, and they succeeded! These are indeed high precision movements and the example here is in good order, calibrated to run consistently accurate. This is truly outstanding for any mechanical watch and it is no exaggeration – The high grade 17 jewel hand-wound movement is in incredibly clean and sparkling condition and has been serviced by a Swiss specialist watchmaker, keeping accurate time. This particular movement with similar care and regular servicing, say every 3 to 4 years, one can expect this watch to continue to run very happily for many more decades to come!

Original Case: The rectangle tank case is of a very solid two-piece design. Has surface hairline scratches associated with precious polished metals commensurate with age and wear. Please see photos.

Case Back Cover Outer: The brushed screw case-back signed Cartier Paris 925 ARGENT PLAQUE OR G 20 M SWISS (serial numbered) 3060653. Has surface scratches associated with precious polished metals commensurate with age and wear. Some wear to edges.

Original Crown/Winder: The blue crystal crown is in reasonable functioning order, adjusting and winding correctly.

Aftermarket Strap/ Original Buckle: New aftermarket strap fitted to the original unsigned gold plated buckle.
