With Above a Hundred Sculptures
LONDON: Printed by Jacob Tonson, MDCCIX, 1709 [published date: 1709].
Rare Third English edition in 3 volumes. 8vo. 8" x 5" inches (LxB). Pp.
[3], 108, 1-211, [i, blank]; [2], 213-545, [i, blank]; [3], 549-857, [i,
blank] pages, complete with 104 copper engraved plates. Title pages
printed in red and black. Plates depict scenes from the Georgics and the
Aeneid, with famous characters like Dido, the Trojan Horse, Anchises and
his funeral games, Juno, Juno's furies, Venus, Poseidon, and others
well-represented by these beautiful and detailed illustrations. Many
plates are unsigned, but those that are include the work of Michael Van
der Gucht, Jan de Leeuw and others. Brueggemann 554. Smith 277.
Original publisher's full fine
tree calf leather bindings, elaborately gilt decorated spines with red
gilt lettered morocco labels in the 2nd compartments, the 3 volumes are
laid in a fine 1/2 red morocco leather Custom Clamshell Case over
marbled boards & gilt lettering on the spine, the box is in a fine
condition.
Tonson's illustrated edition
was first published in 1697. This is the third edition, illustrated by
104 plates. Smith writes that "Pope characterized this most famous
version as "the most noble and spirited translation that I know in any
language", while Dr. Johnson said that "it satisfied his friends and
silenced his enemies", and refers to a quote from J. Conington's
Miscellaneous Writings: "England . is to be congratulated on the
possession of one really fine poem . which constitutes the essence of
all poetry, ancient or modern . in which most of the thoughts are
Virgil's, and most of the language Dryden's". Dryden's translation of
Virgil is famous for its ability to make accessible to English readers
the spirit of Latin epic, and conveys well to the reader the beauty of
Virgil's word choice and style. An uncommon edition of Dryden's
translation (first published in 1697), in a beautifully preserved
contemporary binding. John Drydens Virgil was the first Poet Laureates
major work of translation. It was originally published in a magnificent
folio edition in 1697 - also by Tonson - and Drydens intuitive (rather
than literal) verse rendering proved immensely popular. Dryden's
translation of Virgil-says Pope, (whose own translation of Homer was
inspired by Dryden's work) is the most noble and spirited translation I
know in any language.
Extremely rare. Absolutely spectacular.
A classic work, complete as
issued.
