1930s AUTHENTIC, VINTAGE, TRADITIONAL, JAPANESE, SILK KIMONO - WOMEN’S OFF WHITE, SOFT KINSHA SILK HAORI JACKET - FABULOUS TRADITIONAL JAPANESE PLANTS, FLOWERS & STREAMS DESIGN, EXCELLENT Vintage Condition - REMARKABLY GOOD CONDITION FOR ITS AGE.

This is an authentic Japanese, quality jacket. It is very rare to find pale coloured item of this period without significant stains. This item has many characteristics of the 1930s except for the condition which is remarkably good for the age of the garment.

The base silk is lightweight, fine and slightly lustrous silk. This kind of silk is known as kinsha and is a high end fabric. It is characterised by having a slightest crinkle made by the twisting of threads during manufacture. In fact it is actually mon kinsha which has a figured woven pattern. On this example this underlying woven pattern of flowers and leaves is so sparse and subtle that you can hardly see it, unless you look really closely.

The background colour is a warm off white with a touch of ivory.

On this base is a very traditional type of Japanese pattern in black and vermilion red. There are typical plants and flowers which include, cloud-shaped pine branches, chrysanthemum and peony flowers, bamboo and maple leaves. These are interlaced with meandering lines representing streams. This sort of pattern is often used for the Autumn.
Some of the pattern is outlined in fine gold paint, much of which is still intact which is rare to find.

The lining is very pretty, being a semi-lustrous, smooth, pale pink coloured, (probably) artificial silk with bold pattern. It depicts small chrysanthemum flowers and then larger roundels with stylised plum blossom branches. It also has a little gold paint detailing.

The tying cords (himo) are original and present which is a bonus as they are often missing. These ones are typical of the era, being large and flat in black with a fine grid pattern in golden yellow and gold thread with tasseled ends.

AGE & CONDITION : Everything about this haori's suggests the 1930s except the great condition. The fabric, the patterned lining, the himo cords , are all typical of this date.

The haori's condition is vintage excellent for its age. This means that it is in great shape for a pale coloured item of this age with no conspicuous faults at all. On the exterior, there is one small mark on the back right sleeve and possibly some very slight yellowing overall but this is very subtle and near unnoticeable. On the lining there are a few fine lines. None of these are conspicuous or should affect the wearing of the garment.

This is a vintage item of some considerable age, in overall great shape but please do not expect it to look like new.

SIZE : This haori is fairly typical size.  It should fit a range of sizes up to a size UK 14, although it would also be fine on someone a bit smaller too, as it is supposed to be large and flowing.
Cuff to cuff width is 128cm/50.5".
Overall length is 76cm/30".

The width across the back (side seam to side seam) is 62cm/24.5”. It weighs about 400g. The weight is reflected in the postal costs.

HAORI are short kimono jackets worn over full length kimonos. They are not designed to close in front but can have two tying cords called Himo that are knotted across the chest ( included with this garment). The sleeves are worn shorter than other kimonos. Traditionally they were only worn by men but in the early 19th century, it became fashionable for women to wear them. They make excellent and unusual evening jackets or wall displays, the fabric is often used to make cushions or home décor items. This haori’s could also be used for display.

CLEANING: Vintage silk items should not be washed. They can usually be dry cleaned. Old stains are not usually removable and some finishes like gold paint may be diminished by dry cleaning.

All information is to the best of my knowledge. Please bear in mind, that colours do not always show absolutely accurately on photos and on monitors although they should be close to reality.

My items are mostly vintage and are not returnable unless grossly mis-described, so please check the details and measurements before bidding/buying. Please be aware that vintage clothing does not usually 'look like new' even when it is in excellent condition. Some slight general signs of ageing and use should be expected. If these are conspicuous, they will be mentioned in the description.
