Marcie Michelle Free (born Mark Edward Free on April 12, 1954) is an American rock singer, best known as the lead singer of King Kobra, Signal and Unruly Child.
Free started singing professionally at the age of 19 while living in Flint, Michigan (1973). In 1975, Free moved to Las Vegas, Nevada which eventually (in 1979) led to her relocating to Los Angeles, CA where she met Carmine Appice (Vanilla Fudge, Beck, Bogert & Appice, Rod Stewart) in 1983. Together they formed King Kobra and were signed to Capitol Records in 1984. Free recorded two albums with King Kobra, Ready to Strike and Thrill of a Lifetime, before leaving in November 1986 to pursue other musical interests.
In 1987, Free formed a band with guitarist Danny Jacob, bassist and keyboardist Erik Scott and drummer Jan Uvena, which would later take the name Signal. Signal recorded one album for EMI, 1989's Loud and Clear, before disbanding soon after.
In 1990, Free then joined up with Bruce Gowdy, (Stone Fury/World Trade) and Guy Allison (World Trade) (keyboards), forming a group known as Unruly Child. Unruly Child signed with Atlantic/Interscope Records in 1991 and released their self-titled debut album in 1992. In 1993, Free sang the theme song, "(To Be) The Best of the Best", for the action film, Best of the Best II. Also in 1993, a solo album consisting of demos Free had sung for a mother/daughter songwriting duo named Judithe and Robin Randall was released on an independent label in the UK called Now & Then Records. The album entitled Long Way from Love was re-released on Frontiers Records in 1998. This album version included some of the live performances Free gave while in Manchester, England for the first rock festival known as "The Gods of AOR" in October 1993.
Shortly after the release of Long Way from Love, Unruly Child, after losing their record deal with Atlantic/Interscope, had reformed under the moniker Twelve Pound Sledge and were writing new material in hopes of re-signing with another U.S. label. That never happened, though songs from these sessions were later released in 1995, as a solo album on independent labels in Germany and Japan, entitled Tormented.
Suffering with gender dysphoria all her life, Free came out to the world as Marcie Free in November 1993. In 1995, Free retired from the music business and moved back to Michigan to be close to her family. However, she still sings professionally on the side and in September 2009, Free, Gowdy and Allison reunited as Unruly Child and signed a recording contract with Frontiers Records. A new album with that label, Worlds Collide, has been released to critical acclaim. Unruly Child's triad (Free, Gowdy, Allison) continues to write and record. They released a new album in 2014 entitled Down the Rabbit Hole on the band's own label "Unruly Records".[1]

King Kobra is a hard rock band founded by drummer Carmine Appice after his tenure with Ozzy Osbourne from 1983 to 1984. During the time of their first two albums, the band included four relatively unknown musicians that included vocalist Mark Free, guitarist David Michael-Philips, guitarist Mick Sweda, and bassist Johnny Rod. After two albums on Capitol records—Ready to Strike (November 9, 1985) and Thrill of a Lifetime (1986)—and an independent release entitled King Kobra III in 1988, Appice decided to dissolve the band and join guitarist John Sykes on his Blue Murder project in 1989.[1][2]
In 2010, a new King Kobra emerged, with Carmine Appice on drums, Paul Shortino taking over vocal duties, Mick Sweda on guitar, David Henzerling (a.k.a. David Michael-Philips) on guitar, and Johnny Rod on bass. This lineup released an eponymous album, King Kobra, in 2011 on Frontiers Records, and another album in 2013 entitled King Kobra II.[3]
The band went on hiatus following the release of their 2013 album, largely due to the other commitments of the individual band members. They did, however, play live gigs in 2016 sans Mick Sweda.

Ready to Strike (1985)
For every Poison, W.A.S.P., and Ratt that made it famous during the reign of hair metal in the '80s, there were plenty of other bands like King Kobra that released metal songs equally full of glam, hairspray, and fury. Drummer Carmine Appice's outfit really presents nothing new to the style, yet still delivers a session of hard rocking, tightly performed songs, with "Hunger" standing out with its melodic driven moments that wouldn't be out of place on a Trixter record. It's definitely not groundbreaking stuff, but albums like Ready to Strike aren't made for analysis, they're just simply made to rock & roll, and this definitely does the trick.

Thrill of a Lifetime (1986)
In the mid 1980s, hair-metal bands swapped members the way hip-hop stars trade guest cameos. And few bands exemplified that incestuous quality like King Kobra, who were formed by Vanilla Fudge/Ozzy Osbourne drummer Carmine Appice and would feature past and future members of W.A.S.P., Bullet Boys, and Foreigner. Original wailer Mark Free, captured in full-throttle sex sneer, also embodied the genre’s latent androgyny, later undergoing a sex change and going by the name Marcie. This reissue is justified primarily by its family-tree value, but thanks to a solid emulation of post-Mötley Crüe hard-rock riffing, crossed with the glamorous appeal of Maiden-inspired solos, LIFETIME gives more than the occasional THRILL.

"Iron Eagle (Never Say Die)" was included in the soundtrack album from the 1986 movie Iron Eagle. Song credits: Jake Hooker-Duane Hitchings - 1986 - Capitol Records.
"Hunger", covered by King Kobra but written by Kick Axe (listed as "Spectre General"), was featured in The Transformers: The Movie, and included on the soundtrack album.
"Mean Street Machine" & "Redline", were featured in RoadKill (video game) on radio station 69.3 QQQQ.
Notes
Rod left the band and joined W.A.S.P. in 1986.
Torien, Sweda, and Vincent left to play together in the band BulletBoys.
Free went on to form the bands known as Signal (EMI Records), and Unruly Child (Atlantic/Interscope Records). After coming to terms with her gender dysphoria in 1993 she is now known as Marcie Free.
Led by legendary drummer Carmine Appice, the heavy metal band King Kobra also included vocalist Mark Free, guitarists Earl Slick and Mick Sweda, and bassist Johnny Rod. Debuting in 1985 with Ready to Strike, the group released two more LPs -- Thrill of a Lifetime and King Kobra III -- before disbanding. Rod subsequently joined W.A.S.P., while Sweda later turned up in the BulletBoys.

SIGNAL
This group was formed in 1988 by ex-King Kobra frontman Mark Free, together with one time Alice Cooper rhythm section, Eric Scott (bass/keyboards) and Jan Uvena (drums), with Danny Jacobs (guitar) completing the line-up. Their only album, the Kevin Elson-produced Loud And Clear, was released in the USA in 1989 on EMI Records. The commercial, melodic style of rock was aimed specifically at the American market, and highlighted the undoubted talents of Free to full effect, especially on tracks such as ‘Liar’ and ‘My Mistake’ which featured a duet with Mr. Big’s Eric Martin. The more sensitive side to Free is exhibited on ‘This Love, This Time’, a ballad in the mould of classic Foreigner. The album was critically well received, but despite impressive sales on import in the UK and modest sales in the USA, EMI dropped the band soon after its release. Mark Free has recently resurfaced working alongside former Stone Fury and World Trade guitarist Bruce Gowdy in Unruly Child.

Danny Jacob (born October 8, 1956 is an American composer, songwriter and guitarist.[1] He is best known for composing the score for Phineas and Ferb and singing some songs in the show.[1] He is also known for co-producing the music for the Disney Junior show Sofia The First. He is a three-time Emmy-nominated composer. He also wrote the theme songs for Lilo & Stitch: The Series, The Emperor's New School, Kim Possible, Sonny With A Chance, and Jackie Chan Adventures. As a featured guitarist, Jacob has performed on Shrek, the Bette Midler HBO concert Diva Las Vegas, and on Ray Charles and Aretha Franklin's "Heaven Help Us".
Career
Jacob started playing guitar at 13 years old, honing his skills in acoustic, electric, R&B and jazz playing styles.[2] At 16 years old he formed his own bands, performing in local bars and clubs in Los Angeles.[2] Jacob has played and toured with recording artists: Bette Midler, George Michael, and Tower of Power,[3] and said he has been inspired by Hans Zimmer, John Powell and Harry Gregson-Williams.[1] During DreamWorks' founding years, Zimmer and Jacob worked together on the soundtracks for The Road to El Dorado and Antz. This led to his work as a featured guitarist with score composers Harry Gregson-Williams and John Powell on Shrek. Jacob arranged and co-produced the musical DVD sequence "Shrek in the Swamp Karaoke Dance Party" along with Eddie Murphy's cover of "I'm a Believer" from the soundtrack album.
Personal life
He is married to Grammy-nominated film music producer Marylata E. Jacob.[4]
In 2011, Jacob and Marylata established an endowment for the Teenage Drama Workshop at California State University Northridge.[4] A native of San Fernando Valley, California, Jacob currently lives in Los Angeles.

Erik Scott is an American bass guitar player, producer, and songwriter. Scott played bass for the band Flo & Eddie in the 1970s as well as Alice Cooper in the early 1980s, for whom he also produced. In the 1990s he was one of the founding members of Sonia Dada, which reached the number one position on the Australian music charts with their debut album. Scott was also the co-writer of the song Father, Father, which was the title track for the Pops Staples' album of the same name, winner of the 1994 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Blues Album. In 2008 he became a solo artist as well, with his debut album Other Planets. He has recorded four solo albums in total, including the 2016 ZMR Awards Album of the Year winner In the Company of Clouds.
Early career
Erik Scott played his first instrument in the fourth grade.[1] As a professional he was first recorded as a bass player on the albums of bands as far back as 1969[2] with the bands Food and Jambalaya. Then in 1974 he was the bass player on Flo & Eddie's comedy rock album Illegal, Immoral and Fattening as well as their 1976 follow-up album Moving Targets.[3] Scott also toured with the band from 1974 onwards.[2] According to Scott, it was Flo & Eddie that gave him his enduring industry nickname "Eski".[4] In 1978 Scott became the bass player for Tonio K on his solo album Life in the Foodchain, and in 1980 on Franne Golde's final solo album, Restless.[3] In 1980, Scott was co-producer on Peter McIan's album Playing Near the Edge, which was voted one of Cashbox's top ten albums of the year,[5] and teamed up with Carl Palmer and John Nitzinger in the group PM as bass player for their sole album.[6] They appeared on the German TV show Rockpop performing the single "Dynamite".[7] Scott was a producer on Sharon O'Neill's 1981 album Maybe, which reached number 38 on the Australian music charts.[8] During this period Scott also wrote and recorded music for the television shows Starsky & Hutch, Charlie’s Angels, Vega$, and The Love Boat.[2]
Alice Cooper
Erik Scott's work with Alice Cooper began in 1980, when he was hired as the bass player for the band's Flush the Fashion world tour.[1] By 1981 Scott had become the band leader for Alice Cooper, as well as a writer[9] on songs for Cooper's new album Special Forces. Scott would continue writing and playing bass for Cooper through 1982, including on the album Zipper Catches Skin, which Scott co-produced,[10] and performing in the TV special Alice Cooper a Paris. Scott would later be a producer on Alice Cooper's 1989 compilation album Prince of Darkness. Scott would work further with Alice Cooper on three compilation albums in the late 1990s and early 2000s, including The Life & Crimes of Alice Cooper in 1999 as a composer, and as producer on The Definitive Alice Cooper and Mascara & Monsters: The Best of Alice Cooper in 2001.[3]
Sonia Dada
During this time he became an original member of the second band: Sonia Dada. Scott was a composer for and played bass on their debut album Sonia Dada, which reached the number one position on the ARIA charts, becoming the 13th highest selling album of 1993 in Australia.[11] The single You Don't Treat Me No Good from the album lasted four weeks in the number one position on the Australian charts in 1992—replacing Whitney Houston's I Will Always Love You.[12] At the same time, Sonia Dada's single You Aint Thinking (About Me) was also at number three on the Australian charts.[1]
Scott was also bass player and composer on their 1995 album A Day at the Beach. Scott was quoted as saying at the time that, "It's a very natural connection between eight guys and that's unnatural."[13] In 1998 Scott composed, produced, and played bass on their third album, My Secret Life, and their 1999 live album Lay Down and Love It Live. That year Scott was interviewed about the sound of the group and said, "The best description I've heard that really makes sense to me is that it's a collision of rock 'n' roll and R&B with a gospel seasoning."[14] In 2002 Scott once again served as producer and played bass for their fourth album Barefootsoul, as well as for their 2004 album Test Pattern.[3]
Other Planets
In 2008 Scott released his solo debut Other Planets. John Diliberto reviewed the album as the Echoes radio program CD of the month for February 2009, stating that, "It's an album that's more Pink Floyd than Jaco Pastorius. Scott isn't a frustrated electric guitarist. He's a composer as much as a bass player who dives into the deep soul and nuances of the bass, extracting sensuous melodies and atmospheric moods."[15] Bass Musician Magazine called it one of their favorite CDs of 2008.[16]
And The Earth Bleeds
In April 2014 Scott released his sophomore solo album, And The Earth Bleeds. On the album he both plays the instrumentals and sings vocals on several of the tracks. Lorraine Devon Wilke of The Huffington Post wrote of the album that, "Scott has conjured up a new version of his own artistry in and the EARTH BLEEDS, one that, particularly after repeated plays, becomes mesmerizing and hypnotic... a 'soulful and mystic brew.'"[18] Bass Musician Magazine said of the album that, "Erik has taken his enchanting and mystical music a step further with the release of ‘And The Earth Bleeds’." Many of the songs on the album were inspired by Scott's travels, especially his time spent in Scotland during 2013.[19] The album mixes worlds music, jazz, and other influences. Music Street Journal wrote that the album is "progressive music that defies definition".[20]
Spirits
In 2014 Scott released Spirits, a remix album featuring tracks from his first two solo albums. In December 2014 it ranked Number One on the Zone Music Reporter's Top 100 Radio Airplay chart.[21] New Age Music Reviews said of the album that, "I think diversity is the key to success in area of employment and never is it more evident than with Scott’s music ... Scott’s bass is quite prolific throughout this recording; his prominence and importance to the overall presentation reminded me of the dominance of a Jaco Pastorius or Tony Levin. It is like the purity of a hot springs bubbling essence and the synchronicity of time meeting for a grand explosion of colors and sounds. It’s both beauty and wonder put together in one tightly wrapped package."[22]
In The Company of Clouds
Scott's fourth solo album received the Album of the Year award and Best Contemporary Instrumental Album award from the 2016 ZMR Music Awards.[23] It was also number one on ZMR airplay at the end of that year.[24] Scott's bass is featured on each track as the central instrument, often including his vocals as well. John Pirruccello plays accompaniment on his steel guitar on many tracks, and the album also features several other accompanying artists.[25] The album was inspired by Scott's diagnosis and treatment for esophageal cancer, leading to remission, and the spiritual questions he wrestled with during this time. John Diliberto wrote of the work that Scott is "a bassist who takes leads, playing vocal melody lines that perfectly suit his fretless bass style ... He brings the music into his melodic space, surrounding it with lush, but understated synthesizers and working under the canopy of Pirruccello’s pedal steel."[26]
Other work
In 1979/1980 he provided bass guitar and vocals to Carl Palmer-led band PM on their, one and only, 1980 album 1:PM. Scott's other work in the 1980s included recording as the bass player and a producer on the band Idle Tears' self-titled 1986 album Idle Tears.[27] He was also the co-writer of the Ted Nugent song "When Your Body Talks" on his 1986 album Little Miss Dangerous.[28] In 1987 Scott was a songwriter for the Triumph record Surveillance, which reached gold record status in Canada. In 1989 Scott was composer and bass player on the Signal's album Loud & Clear as well. As a bass player he recorded on Kim Carnes' 1993 compilation album Gypsy Honeymoon: The Best of Kim Carnes, and Pops Staples' 1994 album Father, Father, for which he co-wrote the title track. Father, Father won the 1994 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Blues Album.[29] In 2004 Scott then played bass on Staples' daughter Mavis Staples' album Have a Little Faith.[3]
In the film industry, Scott has provided music for the motion pictures Waterproof starring Burt Reynolds, Nothing to Lose, and National Lampoon's Vacation as well as its sequels.[2]
