Base Line highway sign.
Up for sale today is this Rialto, San Bernardino, Highlands, City Creek Road sign. Made to the exact standards as used around 1917-1918 by the Auto Club of Southern California in the Los Angeles area and elsewhere. the sign shown here was posted between San Bernardino and Highland (known as Highlands until about the 1940s) but it's tough to tell the exact location because this early Auto Club sign style predates the mileages being provided! City Creek Road is now, with a few realignments, state highway 330 going up into the mountains.
The original of these, complete with the logo of the Automobile Club of Southern California, would cost many thousands of dollars if it even survives at all. This sign is a faithful remake to the correct size (18 inches on a side, or about 25 1/2 inches up and down between the points), and weighs about 8 pounds, 4 ounces. please note that I can make a diamond sign for any set of destinations. inquire about custom orders!
This is a high quality, heavy steel sign. Accept no imitations that may be one-third this price, but are one-tenth the quality. No cheap tin to be found here, with the wrong fonts, layouts, size, shape, or any other manner of embarrassing imperfection. This one will make even the most discerning collector stick their nose into the sign, as it looks that good from that close!
