1969 Press Photo Dr. Domingo Liotta holds artificial heart at Houston hospital
Houston, Texas. The life saving hands of Dr. Domingo Liotta hold the mechanical device, known as an Orthotopic Cardiac Prosthesis, as he prepares to implant the device into the chest of 47-year-old Haskell Karp of Skokie, Illinois 4/4. The first total replacement of a human heart by a mechanical device was performed by Dr. Liotta and Dr. Denton A. Cooley and is a modification of a device first developed by Dr. Liotta in 1959 in Argentina. Photo measures 8 x 10 inches. Photo Is dated 1969.
