Japanese Uchishiki Embroidered Buddhist Altar Tablecloth

This is a vintage Japanese Buddhist altar tablecloth Uchishiki. This silk Uchishiki tablecloth is white with a floral pattern. On top of the silk sits a piece of purple fabric embellished with an embroidered design of a hawk and a Japanese character inside a circle. This Uchishiki comes in a paper box.

Uchishiki is mainly used by followers of Jodo Shinshu Buddhism as the upper table (Maejyoku) and the front table (Uwajyoku) in the Buddhist altar during events such as New Year's Day, the equinoctial week, Obon, and memorial services.

  • Good condition considering its age. Slight yellow stains on the silk cloth. Stains on the box. Wear and tear due to age.  Please see the photos carefully.
