Many folio-sized, elaborately-decorated volumes featuring the engravings of Gustave Dore were published during the Victorian era, but none compare to CASSELL'S DORE GALLERY.
This gorgeous book contains 250 beautiful full-page engravings by Gustave Dore, selected from various books illustrated by Dore, such as the Dore Bible, Dante's Divine Comedy, Milton's Paradise Lost, Cervantes' Don Quixote, and others.
The Introduction by Edmund Ollier proclaims:
The object of this collection of Plates is to give some idea of the variety as well as power of M. Dore’s genius. Accordingly, several designs have been selected from eleven of the most important works illustrated by the great French artist – viz., the “Inferno,” “Purgatorio,” and “Paradiso” of Dante: Milton’s “Paradise Lost,” the Bible, “Don Quixote, “The Adventures of Baron Munchausen,” Chateaubriand’s “Atala,” the Fables of La Fontaine, “The Legend of Croquemitaine,” and “The Fairy Realm.”The set of Two Hundred and Fifty Designs will be found to exhibit a great number of different styles, and an extraordinary range of invention, from the highest tragedy to the wildest burlesque. That the execution is, for the most part, equal to the conceptions, will probably be the judgment of all those who worthily explore this rich and wonderful territory.
For your interest and convenience, I have listed the titles of all 250 engravings featured in this collection. Further down the page, you can see a sampling of these amazing works of art. Please note that I have photographed the entire page so that you may see for yourself the cleanliness and condition of the plates.
I hope you’ll take a moment to have a look.
