This is an original letter dated April 15,1862, Headquarters, Smith's Division,where Charles Dwight has written to his mother. He lets her know that he is ok, and visited(brother,Colonel William Dwight) William in a nice oak grove...the men asked if I was coming back for good...see treating the men cruelly did not do any harm, one man he had sent to the guard house shook my hand....William should become a General, he is so good at his job,,,Charly. Letter is 4 pages, 6x9, folds, else in fine condition. 

Charles T. Dwight  was born May 5, 1842 attended Harvard University but left to join the army. Charles was lieutenant in the 70th regiment, taken prisoner in Libby Prison, but lived until March 9, 1884..... Enlisted on 11/1/1861 at Camp Farnum, MD as a 2nd Lieutenant.

On 11/1/1861 he was commissioned into "B" Co. NY 70th Infantry He was discharged on 6/30/1864

He was listed as: * POW (Libby's Prison) * Exchanged 9/21/1862 Aiken's Landing, VA.
