Vitamin E supplements containing only tocopherols do not provide maximum benefits. Although tocopherols are very important for health they lack many of the synergistic benefits offered by their cousins, the tocotrienols. Few people realise that vitamin E is a group of eight different compounds, and commercial supplements focus on only four of them - the tocopherols - while omitting the very important tocotrienols for health. Because of their small but important structural differences, tocotrienols may be more involved in insightful biological processes.

Tocotrienols are customarily classified as molecules in the vitamin E group, composed primarily of compounds called tocopherols.

However, we can regard this as a kind of historical background, as we now know that the most widely distributed tocotrienol in food, despite its similar structure, shows barely 1% of the activity of the most active tocopherol as vitamin E.

Therefore, the properties of tocotrienols go far beyond the activity of vitamin E. Thus, tocotrienols, although much weaker as vitamin E, have much higher and better documented health benefits.
