Up for sale today is this California US 99 route sign. Made to the exact standards as used between 1928 and 1934 along this historic highway.
US route 99 may very well be the most important highway in California, surpassing even route 66 in historical value. Known as the Main Street of California, this highway began at Calexico and headed to Los Angeles, Bakersfield, Fresno, Sacramento, Red Bluff and beyond - past Mount Shasta and into Oregon and Washington before finally terminating at the Canadian border.
An original of these, complete with the yellow diamond logo of the California State Automobile Association, would cost many thousands of dollars if it ever came to the market. I've seen only one CSAA yellow-logo US-99 shield, and it isn't nearly as nice as this one!
This is a high quality, heavy steel sign. Accept no imitations that may be one-third this price, but are one-tenth the quality. No cheap tin to be found here, with the wrong fonts, layouts, size, shape, or any other manner of embarrassing imperfection. This one will make even the most discerning collector stick their nose into the sign, as it looks that good from that close!
Nowadays, US-99 has been replaced, since the 1960s, with interstate 5 in the northern two states, and California state route 99 for over 600 miles. Despite the federal regulations permitting US routes to exist only in a single state, so long as they are over 300 miles, California US 99 was demoted to a state route in 1964 anyway. In order to find US-99 in California, one has to closely scrutinize fifty-year-old guide signs for patches and scrape marks that reveal that the route used to be signed, once upon a time.
