Japanese Shikishi Art Board Reproduction Nishijin Ori Tachibina Hina Dolls A584

Description

Vintage Japanese Shikishi Art Board Reproduction

This is a vintage Japanese shikishi art board. It features a reproduction of a picture by Imase Ryo called 立雛 Tachibina. The picture represents two Hina dolls and some plum blossoms. This shikishi art board consists of fabric woven in the Nishijin Ori style likely glued on the cardboard. The shikishi art board is signed.

There are three basic types of shikishi paper—calligraphy (poem, haiku) only, calligraphy with pictures, and pictures only. Since the Heian period, people have been writing waka and haiku on Shikishi paper (various sizes), but in the Meiji period, they started using paper of the current size. In current day, shikishi paper/boards are used for autographs of celebrities and also commemorative messages to friends, coworkers, and classmates.
