Vintage Tin Battery-Operated Smoking & Shoe Shining

A vintage tinplate battery-operated Smoking & Shoe
Shining Panda Bear with tinplate body covered in black &
 white fur with plastic eyes, holding 2 brushes and with tinplate
shoes and plastic pipe, sitting on a tinplate base, made
 by the Alps Co. in Japan in the 1950’s or 60's. 
 
The panda bear measures 10 inches tall by 4.5 wide and 6
 inches deep and is in very good non-working condition
 with some playwear and minor marks, but with a clean,
rust-free battery box. When switched on, the bear should
 move the brushes quickly from side to side to shine
 his left shoe which he raises up, looking down to
admire his work while his pipe lights and he blows
 smoke from his mouth. Unfortunately, when switched
on, nothing happens, although when the toy is turned
upside down, the pipe lights up. There is therefore
a battery connection, but no movement, and it would
need some attention to make it work. The toy is
marked on the rear of the base with “Trade
 Mark Alps” and “Made in Japan”.
 
A non-working vintage toy in otherwise good condition, that needs
some attention to work, or just for display - still a nice addition to
 a collection of tinplate, battery-operated, animal or bear toys.
