African Snails Destroying Crops: Honolulu, T.H.: This closeup of the African snail shows the Mollusk feasting on a Hawaiian Mango. These giant snails which reproduce prolifically, have voracious appetites and have recently been causing considerable damage to crops. The African snail was first introduced into the South Pacific by Japanese, who raised them for food, and were imported to Hawaii about 1939 as a Japanese delicacy. Some of them grow to tremendous size, weighing more than a pound and measuring about 7 1/2 inches. They were recently found in fairly large numbers in California.
