1953 Press Photo Elizabeth Marothy receives aid after escaping thru Iron Curtain
This is an original press photo. Crawled to freedom -- Vienna, Austria: Mrs. Elizabeth Marothy, 20-year-old wife of Laszlo Marothy, is fitted with new clothes which have been provided by the United States Escapee Program in Vienna. She and her husband reached the Austrian capital after breaking through the Iron Curtain in a horror-filled ordeal which will leave them scarred for the rest of their lives. Mr. Marothy is in a hospital at Graz, in the British Zone of Austria, where he had had part of one leg amputated. He was seriously injured by a land mine which exploded as he and his wife inched their way on hands and knees through barbed wire on the Hungarian-Austrian border. Mrs. Marothy's clothes were torn to ribbons in the mishap and her feet and ankles were hurt in the blast.Photo measures 7 x 9.25inches. Photo is dated 11-05-1953.
