RARE, VINTAGE BUT SEEMINGLY UNUSED, LONGER THAN AVERAGE, VINTAGE CONDITION, AUTHENTIC, MEN'S, JAPANESE YUKATA KIMONO WITH TRADITIONAL BOLD GRID PATTERNS with SIMPLE COTTON TIE BELT.

Men's yukata in excellent condition have become difficult to find, so if you want one, please consider this item.

This is fabulous example of this kind of kimono with a lovely, traditional pattern. It is a fairly typical Japanese size but a bit longer than average by Japanese standards. Japanese clothing can be a bit smaller than UK, so please check the measurements before buying.

The kimono is made of good quality, durable cotton with a substantial, smooth texture. It is fairly soft.

The kimono is fully hand-stitched and formed in the traditional style.

The pattern is a classic type of design. The background is white. There is an underlying abstract grid pattering in mid blue and grey. Over this is printed a dark blue complex grid design.  This is a very typical sort of pattern.

This example is partially lined, in white cotton,  just in the shoulder and seat areas only, which is fairly typical in this sort of summer wear kimono.

I often get asked if I can supply a yukata with a belt so that it can easily be worn as a dressing gown (they are traditionally worn with obi belts which would be bought separately). So I am offering this authentic Japanese yukata kimono with a complementary, simple, cotton tie belt made from  dark blue, vintage, kimono cotton.

In Japan this yukata is a men's yukata (the sleeve slit is smaller & closed on a man's yukata) and the pattern is relatively plain compared to women's.

AGE & CONDITION: This yukata probably has a little age as it is fully hand-stitched, has no labels and the cotton is good quality.. These all suggest a little age but the condition and presence of basting threads suggests it is unused so it may be more recently made.    It is difficult to date these kind of traditional kimono accurately because they are traditional garments that have been made in the same way for many decades. I would say it is probably early Heisei Period (1989-2019) but it could be older.

This garment appears to be unused. It looks like it has never been used. It has basting threads. These are large white stitches put into kimono before use to keep them in perfect shape. They can easily be snipped and removed.
Generally it is clean and looks unused. However, on close inspection, there is some minor and subtle yellowing on the front sleeves and lower back skirt, near the hem. This is not conspicuous but may account for how this item came to the second hand market when it appears to be unused. It is a vintage, probably unused item but please do not expect it to be exactly like brand new.

SIZE: This yukata is a little longer than average for this sort of kimono by Japanese standards which is rare to find.   Japanese clothes can be smaller and shorter that UK/US standards so please check the measurements given below against your own dressing gown to compare.
It should fit a range of sizes as it is a wrap over style, up to maximum UKM/L.

MEASUREMENTS:
Cuff to cuff width is 52"/132cm.
Overall length is 57"/145cm.
The width across the back side seam to side seam 23.5"/60cm. The width all around the kimono from the front of one side, all the way round the back to the front of the other side, at the waist level is about 53"/135cm and please remember you need a good crossover in front.

The belt is about size 165cm/65" long by 3cm/1.25" The set together weighs about 550g.

YUKATA comes from “YU” meaning bath and “Katabira” meaning under-clothing. Over one thousand years ago court nobles wore linen Kimonos or “yukatabira” which were draped loosely over the body after taking a bath. Yukata gradually became worn by the warriors, who would also use the yukata like a towel to dry after a bath. The general public began to wear cotton kimonos about three hundred years ago when the Japanese public bath became popular. These kinds of light weight cotton kimonos were worn everyday as casual clothing after taking a bath—bathrobes! Now the yukata is widely used for everything from traditional Japanese dance, for summer festival wear and casual wear in the summer, to simple night attire. Today, yukata generally means an unlined cotton kimono for casual wear.

Washing information - Almost all yukata can be hand or machine washed at low temperatures.   However, vintage yukata sometimes have colour runs in water so please test before washing and always wash separately). I would hand wash the belt

If you need any more information or pictures just email me.

All information is to the best of my knowledge. Please bear in mind, that colours do not always show absolutely accurately on photos and on monitors although they should be close to reality.

My items are mostly vintage and are not returnable unless grossly mis-described, so please check the details and measurements before bidding/buying. Please be aware that vintage clothing does not usually 'look like new' even when it is in excellent condition. Some slight general signs of ageing and use should be expected. If these are conspicuous, they will be mentioned in the description.
