Early Staffordshire Child's Pearlware Mug

This early tiny pearlware mug stands just 2-1/2 inches high and measures 2-1/2 inches across excluding the applied handle with leaf terminals. Made of earthenware, transfer printed in teal green against a creamy earthenware blank, with a pink lustre rim, finished with pearlglaze. A wraparound central image featuring a classical figures of women feeding children and a goat, encircled with a decorative border and pink lustre rim.

The mug is in overall very good condition.  A hairline at the base of the handle and no other chips cracks or repairs. Minor typical firing imperfections consistent with age. Beautifully executed transfer print, a lovely example of primitive childrens toys from early Victorian England. Sold as is.

The mug is marked with a partially readable backstamp from Davenport, a well respected manufactory in the Staffordshire region of England from early 19th century. Mugs like these were given as gifts for good children rewards of merit and were used as early teaching tools and learning incentives. A lovely addition to your pearlware ware, childrens educational and ABC transferware collection.
