Seymour Haden (1818-1910) was a surgeon and etcher who became the father of the British Etching Revival, introduced Whistler to this genre of art and popularized a minimalist approach to etching which had not been used since the time of Rembrandt. "Shepperton" was a print that was published in the first set of etchings released publicly by Haden. It is dated 1864, signed and titled in the print. This small etching can virtually be studied line by line to experience the radical changed Haden brought to this art. It has often been illustrated in etching books since that time - Hind's "Etchers and Engravers", Hardie's "British School of Etching" (frontispiece) and Guichard's "British Etching". Very good original condition with a light crease in the lower right and a slight stain in the upper left. Image size 5 1/2 x 4 3/4 inches. Sheet size 7 1/4 x 5 3/4 inches.
