US Navy Fighter Squadron VF-24, also known as the "Fighting Renegades," played an important role in the Vietnam War. The squadron was deployed to Southeast Asia from 1964 to 1973 and flew combat missions in support of ground troops, conducted air defense patrols, and provided close air support to US and allied forces.

The Fighting Renegades flew the F-8 Crusader, a single-engine fighter aircraft that was specifically designed for carrier-based operations. The aircraft was armed with air-to-air missiles, bombs, and rockets, allowing the pilots to engage both ground and air targets.

During the Vietnam War, the Fighting Renegades flew over 13,000 combat missions and shot down 18 enemy aircraft. The squadron also dropped over 7,000 tons of bombs and fired over 30,000 rockets and missiles in support of ground forces.

One of the most notable missions of VF-24 during the Vietnam War was the "Yankee Station Alert," which was a standing patrol of US Navy aircraft that provided air defense for the aircraft carrier USS Constellation. The Fighting Renegades, along with other Navy fighter squadrons, engaged North Vietnamese Air Force MiG-21s in a series of air battles over the Gulf of Tonkin. The squadron shot down several enemy aircraft during this mission, earning the squadron a Presidential Unit Citation.

The Fighting Renegades also participated in Operation Rolling Thunder, the bombing campaign that targeted North Vietnamese military targets from 1965 to 1968. During this operation, the squadron provided close air support to US and South Vietnamese ground forces and attacked enemy supply lines.
