Very Nice
Early Copy of GONE WITH THE WIND by Margaret Mitchell. Published by The Macmillan Company, New York.
This is
actually the 9th Printing of the Book. The May, 1936 Printing (stated as “Published
in May, 1936” on the Copyright Page), the First True Issue of 10,000 copies,
was recalled though an unknown number of these copies actually reached the
marketplace. When next published, the
Copyright Page began with June, 1936 as the first issue date, even though it
was not, so it’s not uncommon to see this listed as the “8th” printing
as there is no mention of May.
Given that
855,000 copies were published in the US in 1936 and the printing histories
noted on the copyright pages for that year, it is estimated that this particularly
copy is among the first 200,000 to 250,000 issued of these immensely popular
book.
The Book is
in very good condition. Pages are clean
and without tears though there is some minor age discoloration to the deckled edges
and a light pen mark along the bottom. Binding
is tight.
The Grayish
Cloth Boards view very nicely and are in quite good condition showing only
minor wear and moderate soiling which is amazing given the notoriously poor condition
usually found on these covers given the quality of the material used.
