About the Design:
Designed by Canadian artist Trevor Tennant, the coin depicts a
young raccoon alongside its mother on a summer evening in their
wetland habitat. As the sunset casts a golden glow upon the water
in the background, this raccoon family begins its nocturnal
activities.
Both raccoons are beautifully rendered with fine detailed
engraving that captures their soft expressions and the texture of
their fur. A three-quarter profile provides a magnificent view of the
young raccoon's features, while selective colouring brings to life
its grey-brown fur and distinctive markings—particularly its dark-
colored eye mask and ringed tail.
The adult raccoon stands to the right of her young, ever attentive
to any signs of danger as the kit is poised on a rock along the
water's edge, near the green vegetation that provides shelter for
some of the aquatic creatures that sustain them in the wild.
Did you know...
Raccoons don't quite hibernate but they do sleep longer during
our cold winters; they will eat more to build up fat reserves ahead
of winter's advance.
Raccoons are excellent swimmers—but only if they have to! They
do, however, have a curious habit of dipping their food at times in
water.
They're omnivorous, with a diet that could include berries, nuts,
seeds, insects, eggs, birds, mice, fruits and vegetables; but their
favorite foods include fish, crayfish, frogs, clams and snails.
On average, a raccoon has a life expectancy of about five years.
Raccoons move along the ground by walking on the entirety of
their foot; but they're dextrous, allowing their toes to open shells,
trashcans and even open a jar or untie a shoe!
