California US 101 historic route marker.

Up for sale today is this California US 101 route sign. Made to the exact standards as used starting in 1975 along this famous road. The sign incorporates a 1949-specification California Department of Public Works, Division of Highways route marker with extra bright white dots on the numerals to simulate the old style Stimsonite reflectors. The sign is a faithfully scaled remake of the original 24 x 30 inch sign in a more displayable 9.6 by 12 inch size. It is made of heavy gauge steel and weighs about 2 pounds, 15 ounces.

US route 101 is the last surviving highway from the US system of 1926 that still retains much of its mileage in California. Originally starting in San Diego, the road heads to Los Angeles and then up the coast to San Francisco, and then even further north through Eureka and into Oregon, before entering Washington and curling around the Olympic Peninsula.

An original of these is very rare to find scrapped; most of them enjoy their active service on the highway and the side streets. So here is your chance to own an excellent display piece, without chancing legal trouble. Please see my other auctions if you are looking for this sign in the original 24 x 30 inch size.

This is a high quality, heavy steel sign. Accept no imitations that may be one-third this price, but are one-tenth the quality. No cheap tin to be found here, with the wrong fonts, layouts, size, shape, or any other manner of embarrassing imperfection. This one will make even the most discerning collector stick their nose into the sign, as it looks that good from that close!

I can of course make these signs with any route number of your choice, and not just this style, but older and newer ones, and even the classic mileage, direction, and city limit guide signs from bygone eras. Anything you would like, made with unsurpassed quality right here in the good old US of A.
