J Clementson
8.5" Red Transferware Plate
RUSTIC SCENERY
Granite Opaque Pearl, c 1840s-1860s

This antique plate was made by J. Clementson, one of the noted Stoke-on-Trent Staffordshire potters in the UK. The pattern is called "Rustic Scenery," with two children carrying banners or flags in the center, surrounded by a wreath of vines. The rim is covered with grape leaves, and 6 oval scenes of small country cottages (there are actually 2 cottage scenes, each repeated 3 times). The color is a pinkish red on white, and the plate is labeled with a variety of "wares": Granite, Opaque, and Pearl.

The plates measures 8.5 inches wide across the round rim. It is in fairly good condition, with no chips or cracks. There is some crazing, more visible on the back side where it has started to brown; there are some fainter brown spots on the surface, most notably at the verge, where there is a rough spot in the glaze (feels like a faint flake in the finish). There are also several small gouges or scratch marks, I would guess from utensil use, and a couple of skips in the red pattern which are original to the manufacture.

The back shows an elaborate lion and unicorn mark, with crown, with the words "Rustic Scenery | Granite | Opaque | Pearl | J. Clementson." According to the esteemed thepotteries.org website, this company opened in 1839, and Joseph Clementson retired in 1867 and passed the business to his four sons and his son in law who continued the business as Clementson Bros.
