ITEM DESCRIPTION
Two circulated 1928 £1 banknotes from the United Kingdom which have been mounted and framed. I have NOT taken them out to examine the backs etc. Just as you see it is how I got them in.
£1 - One Pound banknote from the Bank of England and a Treasury issue £1 One Pound banknote from United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland that have both been mounted and framed.
The top green Bank of England £1 is from the Cyril Patrick Mahon era with a rare ( inaugural run ) early serial number A01 801841. The note as you can see on the photograph has 3 fold - crease marks, so been in half and folded again at some time in its life, so it has been circulated.
You can also see where its been mounted on the stiff card they have used some sort of glue, this has made the very top 1cm or so and the same at the bottom of the note look slightly greener on the wavy watermark lines and can be seen especially on the top right of the note.
I would imagine the glue they have used or maybe double sided sticky tape has made this look the way it does.
The bottom Treasury issue £1 is from the Warren Fisher era with serial number U1 over 40 No. 836414. This note has also been folded in a similar place to the above note.
The prefix has a dot. ( not a square dot ) So I think this is a T34 from the banknote book by V. Duggleby, 9th edition book I have, which I have to say I am disappointed with the binding of the book as the cover has completely fallen off the book.
Notice the colour of this Fisher £1, it is more green than it is brown and looks more like the colour of a 10/- banknote really. Maybe the colours vary as I actually do not see that many of these early notes.
Although these are mounted and framed, I think only the corners and possibly side edges have actually been glued down.
Both notes have been stuck to the mount by an unknown glue or double sided sticky strip, I cannot tell if the complete note is stuck down or just corners or strips, I just cannot tell !!
The bottom note has the " green " looking smudges on its edges and corners from whatever glue or substance has reacted ? with the top note. See the CLOSE UP photographs to see what I am jabbering on about.
In the middle is an old bit of paper with the sepia coloured ink probably faded from a dip ink fountain pen. This says Money Issues 1928 and about the notes being from 1928.
I have not been into the back of the frame, they are just as they have come in.
If you are a coin dealer or collector you will probably have seen tin boxes full of coins which have been mildew or similar damp, and any paper that is within the box as a liner say, gets this sort of " green smudge " like residue on it. Rather like the old " wax crayons " residue. That is what the top note looks like to me. Whoever has mounted them both has had something on their fingers and its contaminated the paper. I am describing them as best I can as the TOP NOTE is an ext. rare one and should be worth a few quid !
I see numerous live auctions have sold these inaugural A01 notes which say they have been cleaned and ironed. This note is exactly as you see it here, just as I got it in.
