Framed, signed etching by the artist E M Synge, in a wooden frame and protected by glass.

The etching has a Gallery label to verso (reverse) James Connell & Sons, Glasgow, 31 Renfield Street and a hand written title which looks like "The Alsager Toledo".

The etching is of a castle, which may be the castle of San Servando in Toledo, Spain, though I cannot be sure. It is numbered 566 which looks like a Gallery number.

The etching dates to around 1900-1910, though it is undated.

E M Synge (Edward Millington Synge) 1860-1913, was born in Great Malvern and educated at the Grammar School in Norwich, after which he entered Trinity College Cambridge. He later studied drawing and etcing at the evening class at the Westminster School of Art under Sir Frank Short and Sir Seymour Haden. In 1898 he was elected an Assoicate of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers.
In 1899 he began to exhibit at the Royal Academy. He also exhibited at the Glasgow Institute - and this etching may be from that period - since it has a Glasgow gallery label.

The etching has the gallery label of James Connell & Sons, Glasgow (c1906-1930s) an art gallery and publisher of etchings in Glasgow and London. They dealt mainly in etchings and works on paper - and it is listed that they sold works of E M Synge through their Glasgow Gallery at 31 Renfield Street - also labelled thus to verso.

The etching is contained a within a wooden frame which may be original and contemporaneous to the etching, also protected by glass. Please judge for yourself.

The dimensions of the frame are 22" tall by 16" wide (56 cm x 30 cm). The dimensions of the etching are 10" tall by 8" wide (26 cm x 20 cm).

The etching itself is signed by Synge to the bottom and is in good / very good condition - see photos.

The frame is very slightly scuffed to corner tips, but still in good, original condition and the glass is clear and uncracked. Again, please see photos for condition.

Only one other Synge etching on Ebay, without a frame, priced at £76 + expensive US postage.

Mine is £15, with the frame and protected by glass + Postage £9 UK. I am not posting this abroad, as it is difficult to pack securely with the frame and glass and ensure safe delivery abroad - hence a prohibitve price to deter anyone from requesting international postage.
