AUTHENTIC GORGEOUS TABLE ROCK (aka BENTON BOTTLE NECK) ARROWHEAD Made of a VITREOUS BURLINGTON CHERT From the Ex-Rodney Gray Collection. The point was found in SCOTLAND COUNTY, MISSOURI MO. Measures approximately 1.75" in length x 1" in width x 4/16" in depth. MATERIAL:  The point is a CREAMY, OFF-WHITE COLOR with yellowish and greyish vertical patches. The actual hue looks most like a combination between the colors shown in the first and second scans above. As stated earlier, it is made of BURLINGTON CHERT, which is a highly predominant chert type throughout the midwestern U.S. through extensive trading because of its beauty and the fact that it was so knappable. But, its greatest concentration can be found at the confluence of the MIssissippi and Arkansas Rivers in the states of Missiouri, Illinois, and Iowa. Burlington ranges from WAXY in texture to VITREOUS and is considered a very HIGH QUALITY chert. Heat treatment is very common for this chert type. This particular point is not heat treated. AGE:  Dates to the MIDDLE ARCHAIC CULTURE - 6,000 B.P. - 4,000 B.P.  CONDITION and CHARACTERISTICS: Has 2 very small nicks - 1 is on one of the sides of the base and the other is on one of the shoulder barbs. When viewed with a 30x loupe, both nicks clearly have PATINA which leads me to believe they are PREHISTORIC chips. It was difficult to capture these tiny chips with my phone's camera, but photo #15 shows the base nick most clearly. As for the should barb chip, photo #17 shows it quite well (on the right side angled upward). The tip is still QUITE SHARP to the touch. I do not see any other flaws, but please examine all photos carefully and you be the judge. The point is nicely flaked in most places and more so on one side than the other (via PERCUSSION FLAKING) with BASAL THINNING/GRINDING. It has the CLASSIC, EXCURVATE SHAPE and WIDE, ROUNDED NOTCHES. The STEM is more narrow than the body and EXPANDS somewhat (towards its base). The base is concave. PROVENANCE and PATINA: I obtained this artifact in an online auction through my favorite auctioneer who I trust implicitly and have spoken with at length over the phone on numerous occasions. His honesty and outstanding customer service have earned him a growing popularity and increasing sales as one of the PREMIER ARTIFACT AUCTIONEERS on the largest internet auction site today. I have never doubted the authenticity of any artifact I have bought from him and he is well known to always have great provenance for the artifacts he sells (unlike some well known auctioneers from the same site who have been around a lot longer). This piece is well patinated with numerous MINERAL DEPOSITS (mainly in the form of OXIDATION) as well as many DIRT FILLED HINGE FRACTURES throughout both sides of the point. I'm not sure - but adding more insurance may put you in a different and more expensive shipping category such as Priority Mail. I was a long time seller on eBay some 15-20 years ago with 100% positive feedback which I maintain to this day. Bid with confidence! And, thank you for looking!!
