Pearlware Childs Miniature Toy Dollhouse Plate
MONASTERY ON THE HILL

 Hackwood  Staffordshire England c.1830

This is stunning and scarce historical Staffordshire tiny toy plate, c 1830, made as part of a complete children's transferware dinner service. The tiny plate measures 2-3/4 inches in diameter, transfer printed in a rich cobalt blue with a pearlware glaze.

The tiny plate was finely potted and detailed, depicting a farmer and his cow walking in a pasture at the foot of a hill, with a humble cottage in the foreground and a church monastery at the top of the hill. Morning glories and lilies on a vine wind around the border. The pattern name is most commonly known as Monastery Hill , also referred to as Monastery on the Hill and/or Institution.

The plate is marked with an impressed 'HACKWOOD'.  Made by William Hackwood (late Cockson & Harding) a pottery maker in the Staffordshire district of England in the early 1800s. The quality of the form and detailing of the engraved image is far superior to what would be expected on these diminutive sized pieces.

The plate is in great condition, with no chips, cracks or repairs. Minor glaze crazing, glaze ponding and minor firing flaws typical of these early wares. The tiny plate is a pocket size work of art, and will make a fine addition to any collection of childrens wares or miniature doll house transferware. The pattern is especially attractive in blue. Offered as is, as shown.

We are also other early miniature transferwares to mix and match.
