Gergel served as the company's President from 1973 until the company was sold to North Street Associates on in 1975. He became President again in 1977, where he remained until 1980 when he left to become division Manager of Mack Fire Apparatus. While at Ward, he served in Engineering, designing and styling the "Firebrand" and Ultra-Vision" units, moving through sales engineering to Sales Manager, where he was responsible for developing a national sales dealer network. Then to Vice-President Sales where is credited for selling the first Lime yellow apparatus to Executive Vice President an then to the Presidency, negotiating an $18.4 million contract with the Royal Kingdom of Morocco. While serving as President designed and styled the "Patriot" Gergel became a member of America's Young Presidents Club at age 39. He also served in industry associations, FAMA (Fire Apparatus Manufacturers Association) and FEMSA (Fire & Emergency Manufacturers & Service Association), and most currently is a member of SPAAMFAA (Society for the Preservation and Appreciation of Antique Motor Fire Apparatus).
