Illustrated book - NSU RO 80 the history of the Wankel engine

Motorbuch Verlag / Dieter Korp

Even 50 years after its presentation, the NSU Ro 80 is still an exceptional phenomenon on the road: like no other automobile, it combines progressive design with extravagant technology. Claus Luthe, later chief designer at BMW, created a shape that still impresses today with its elegance and timelessness, but is also highly aerodynamic. The unique Wankel engine and progressive safety features add up to a vehicle that continues to delight today.

However, the downsides should not be ignored: NSU was slow to get to grips with the design-related disadvantages of the Wankel engine, which permanently damaged the reputation of this technology - and ultimately that of the Ro 80. While the testers raved about the safety, driving comfort and design, customers complained about engine damage and fuel consumption of more than 20 liters per 100 km.

Really exciting stories about the genesis of a car icon.
