The January issue of "a+u" features drawings by Frank Gehry, covering 30 years from the 1960s to the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao in the late 1990s. Although the works on display are diverse in terms of program, material and form, as guest editor Jean-Louis Cohen describes them, they "are the cradle of radical combat that will be followed for decades to come." You will be able to see the budding of the work that became. Through drawings, sketches, and photographs, this special feature traces the process of discovering the fragmentation of elements and reintegrating them into a fluid continuum. From this point onwards, as well as experimenting with form aspects, from LA's "exploding" box, it became a turning point not only in terms of building form but also in terms of office structure--digitalization and the accompanying shift to a model-centered process-- You can also find Gehry's search for a foothold as an architect in LA, all the way up to the Bilbao Guggenheim.
Much of the material in this publication draws from the recently cataloged and digitized Gehry Archive, and many of these early materials are now under the control of the Getty Research Institute (GRI). For Gary, who has continued to thoroughly preserve materials, archiving is not "preservation, but an extension of practice that is constantly changing." (ed.)
