This week we are offering Joanies “Great Estates” multi-week spring estate auction sales. This group of auctions features an amazing array of fresh to market hand picked treasures. We have saved up a great array of choice examples from important estate collections. The main portion of the collection came for a prominent Le Chateau Montreal family collection we have been offering over the past months. The family has now asked us to clear out their parents (packed full) Laurentian’s chalet. The vast majority of items were acquired by the parents 40-70 years ago, with many others being earlier family heirlooms. The family has indicated their parents were good friends of Alex Gurie of the famed Gurie Gallery, Montreal, and that many of the Asian arts examples were acquired from Gurie during the 1960 to 70s. This is surely one of the most impressive and large estates we have dealt with in over 20 years of offering estate items here on eBay. We believe this is one of the more unique and rare examples being offered from this great estate collection.

This plate depicts the very unique Chinese Pronk porcelain service “La Dame au Parasol” landscape design. The plate features under-glazed blue designs, along with Imari-type, iron-red and gold gilt decor painted features. We find the outer rim decor very unique, seemingly drawing one’s attention to the plate. The reverse side of the plate is also uniquely decorated with eight iron-red insects surrounding the plate’s exterior rim.

Research: For a near identical example please see Christies, New York, Benjamin Edwards III collection of Chinese Export Porcelain, lot 106, sold Jan 22nd, 2003. In the catalogue notes Christies dates this plate as being created c1738-40. The catalogue notes also indicate the reverse side of the plate they offered has the same iron-red insects decor to the reverse side. This is the only example with this unique design we could locate, leading us to believe this plate is a very unique and rarely found example. This plate is being offered Without Reserve!

Condition: Estate-fresh, minor wear and tiny imperfections consistent with early age. One extremely tiny rim nick that is over-glazed indicating it is original. The plate has no further chips, no cracks, and no repairs. The plate is nice and “round” and uniform in shape and sits nice and stable on its footrim. UV light reveals no hidden damage or repairs. In our opinion about as fine of condition as one could ever hope to find an example of this early age in. Of investment-grade.

Size: The plate measures 8 7/8 inches wide.
