From the brochure: "Pastels and picture windows were very much in vogue. THE MARKET DINER employed both to achieve a special look that set it apart from other dining establishments."

This piece looks right at home in Miami or on Florida beaches in the 1960s - the cantilever roof would never hold up to snowfall without staining the ceiling! Warm gray stone makes the foundation, with light green and yellow stripes halfway up the sides. The windows are framed in pink and the door is cool blue. The roof is yellow and green with pointy zig-zag edges. The large diner sign is green and reads "Market DINER" with "PARKING" and an arrow indicating where to pull in that muscle car or VW Bug. The sign in the window reads "AIR CONDITIONING/BAKING ON PREMISES/CATERING". Cast in solid resin, this piece weighs in at over 1 pound and boasts exquisite detail.

Lefton's Great American Diners was designed by David Stravitz for the Roadside U.S.A. collection. From the booklet: "David Stravitz has been called 'a genius of artistic detail'...The Lefton Diner Project was one in which the artist became emotionally involved. 'As a kid, I went to diners with my family. As I matured, I saw them overtaken by fast food franchises that all looked alike. As an artist with strong roots that reach into the past, I wanted to preserve something that was purely "American" and the diner provided a link to our recent past.'" Also, "Diners are an uniquely American phenomenon. They were the independent forerunners of today's fast food franchises. While they shared similarities in style and menu, each diner strove to establish its own identity. Artist David Stravitz has captured the character of these 'culinary landmarks in miniature' and given them an incredible level of detail."

Each piece in the Roadside U.S.A. Collection is in HO scale and looks perfect with tiny cars and people in a railroad display or retro cityscape.

The MARKET DINER is 1 of 8 recreated in the Great American Diners series. Produced in limited quantities, the entire collection was retired in 1994 and sold out soon after.
