This is an original letter dated December 18, 1861, Camp Farnum, VA..where Charles Dwight has written to his mother. He relates his first hand account of the gunboats fighting it out at Budd's Ferry...shells flying over head, one went right through Budd's house,Mason and Slidell ought to be in priosn, The President doesn't realize that we are in a real war,... a ball just flew over our camp into the woods....Charly. Letter is 3 pages, 8x10, folds, else in very good condition. 

Charles T. Dwight  was born May 5, 1842 attended Harvard University but left to join the army. Charles was lieutenant in the 70th regiment, taken prisoner in Libby Prison, but lived until March 9, 1884..... Enlisted on 11/1/1861 at Camp Farnum, MD as a 2nd Lieutenant.

On 11/1/1861 he was commissioned into "B" Co. NY 70th Infantry He was discharged on 6/30/1864

He was listed as: * POW (Libby's Prison) * Exchanged 9/21/1862 Aiken's Landing, VA.
