ITEM DESCRIPTION
WOW this is an absolute cracking jewellery box - casket made from one piece of wood.
This is an antique Victorian hand carved jewellery box referred to Black Forest ware wood which can actually be made in a number of countries in Europe.
The box has been carved to depict a cockerel / rooster, a hen, and 4 little chicks on a bundle of wheat.
If you look to the far left you will see a curved item stuck up with a small chick sat below it. This is a SICKLE that has been used to cut the wheat from the field by hand and then its been bundled into a sheave, and you can see the string or ribbon its depicting just below the sickle. The handle of the sickle can be seen as well, slightly stuck out at the left.
The inside is lined with purple velvet.
It is lockable and comes with its original iron key and brass lock. Two brass hinges.
No maker's marks etc. from what I can see.
Only issue with this box it has 2 small " ends " if the wheat broken off near the female chicken at the lower right side. Just behind her tail, and just above her back. About 1cm missing from both parts I would say.
The attention to detail on the carving of the birds and the wheat is exceptional.
So carved from one bit of wood in the general shape, then sawn to create a top and bottom then carved out to create the box and lid. Really fabulous. You will only see how good this is when it is in your hand.
It is carved on all sides apart from the base, the back has a flatter appearance but it too is carved like a bundle of wheat. Flatter so you can put it against a wall or have it on a table to be seen from all sides.
The lock is a little " strange " sometimes it locks and then does not unlock, but just keep turning it and it will unlock.
The top and bottom of the box fit well and there are no gapes or drying out where its buckled etc. It is a really fabulous box overall and far different to any Black Forest jewellery caskets - boxes I have in the past.
