Background of the artist:

Polish immigrant, Boleslaw Cybis studied art in St. Petersburg, Russia and came to America. He painted a mural at the New York World's Fair and founded Cordey China Company in 1942 in Flemington, New Jersey. The operation consisted of less than a dozen skilled artists who produced elegant works of art including vases, lamps, figurines and animals. Sales were both domestic and abroad. Early works were plaster but Cybis created a porcelain composition called papka and were characterized by old world charm, delicate floral applications, ruffles and rocco scrolls. Actual lace was dipped and draped for a 3D effect on some figurines. Not all pieces were marked but each were individually painted. Some bear the mark of the artist. He opened a second studio, CYBIS, in 1950. Production ceased at both locations in the late 1950's after the passing of both Cybis and his wife.
