Antique German 800 Silver Bowl
Pierced Openwork Sides and Beaded Rim
(c. 1890s)

This lovely little bowl has a very intricate pierced and beaded design. The sides have pierced bars and tiny holes, and the rim is accented with a beaded border. It measures 7 inches long, 4.5 inches wide, and 1 inch high. I looked at it for years before I saw the small "800" mark on the rim edge, indicating 80% silver and apparently (according to google) the national standard in Germany after 1886. I believe this piece likely originates in Germany, as it was part of a larger collection of antique German silver brought to the US in the 1920s (by the mother of a friend of mine).

The piece is in fairly good condition. You can see in the closeup photos there is a fair amount of tarnish (I'm afraid to clean silver beyond removing dirt and dust!), and a little bit of unevenness around the rims at either end.

There are no other marks that I can see (and I've tried), except for the small 800 at the edge of the rim.
