First decimal coin series (1961–1964)
- In 1961, when the Republic of South Africa was proclaimed, the country formally adopted a decimal system, with coins being converted to their decimal equivalent resulting in the one pound becoming a two-rand coin, the 5 shilling a 50 cent, the 2 shilling a 20 cent, the one shilling a 10 cent, the 6 pence a 5 cent and the three pence a two-and-a-half cent coin, the penny a 1 cent and the farthing a half cent. This system remained in place until 1964.
