This is a very unusual celluloid powder compact  from Japan and dates to the Taisho era (1920's). It not only has a hand painted Torii Gate on the lid but depicts one of the most famous, the 'floating' Itsukushima Shrine, and a veritable symbol of Japan. This  powder compact is in excellent condition with no cracks, damage or repair and has its original transparent celluloid liner which is pierced to allow the powder to coat the puff (missing). The liner's holes are in a pleasing pattern resembling the shape of a Japanese heraldic Mon design and as such, the whole piece exudes a Japanese Aesthetic. It will appeal to all collectors of compacts, vanity items, Japanese design and bakelite/ celluloid and measures 6 cm in diameter by 1.5 cm high.
