Recently acquired is this apparently unmarked silver piece which appears to be a napkin ring or hanging ornament with very beautiful aesthetic decoration, but with a small split ring attached to the side which is not normal for a napkin ring.  It certainly can be used as a napkin ring, and the small split ring could easily be removed. Because of the aesthetic decoration, I would normally date this piece to 1880s, but because I do not see any identifying marks, I can not date it with certainty and it may be more modern. It is a bit of a mystery because of the added split ring, which may be original or may have been added later. I have suggested it might be a napkin ring, but perhaps there was different purpose. It could be an ornament meant to hang from a window frame, Christmas tree, etc. It could be part of a necklace, but seems rather heavy for that purpose. It is slightly elongated, measuring 2 1/4” across the top (long way) and 1 7/8” across the top (short way) and has a width of 1 1/8”. Since it is unmarked I assume it is silverplate, but I did weigh it and it is 48 grams. Condition: it was tarnished and I did hand polish it to get a lot of the tarnish off, but the buyer may want to finish the job. There are some nicks along the top and bottom edges.
