Japanese Hanging Scroll Kakejiku

This vintage Japanese hanging scroll (kakejiku or makimono) features an illustration of a Buddha descending the mountain after asceticism. It is painted in a simple monochrome style. This piece is signed with a red seal. 

Kakejiku is a Japanese picture or calligraphy mounted on a piece of paper. Kakejiku was a tool to spread Buddhism in Japan. It has been integrated with Japanese culture as interior decoration. Tokokake is used at the Tokonoma in tatami room. Chakake has Zen words used in the tea ceremony room. Buddha-kake is used in the Buddhist altar.

  • Good condition considering its age. One end cap is missing. Tear on the top edges. Wrinkles. Wear and tear due to age. Please see the photos.
