"A diving adventure movie set in Bermuda, written by Peter Benchley, starring Robert Shaw...this was basically a trap that any Jaws fan would find impossible to resist!

After Jaws, Benchley could have gotten his grocery list adapted for the big screen. Thankfully, he decided not to, and his other novels were adapted instead. The Deep was one of them, also set on the sea, which seemed to be his favorite location.

Robert Shaw, at times, seems to be channeling Quint all over again. For me, I didn't mind one bit. He's in his element, just where I want him to be. Nick Nolte in one of his first big major roles is great as always. Jacqeline Bisset, in her wet white T-shirts, diving alongside Nolte, is a cool, adventure-loving lady and easy on the eyeballs. Louis Gossett Jr. (another reason this Jaws fan is happy) is a slithering villain that exudes real menace. Eli Wallach is perfect as the less than loyal sidekick.

It's a fun retro adventure for me, for a couple reasons. I was taken to see this as a kid by my parents. It was an eyeful for a kid to see so much underwater activity. I was a little worried because I knew there was some Jaws connection, so I almost screamed when the eels showed up. Years later, I traveled to Bermuda, which is a gorgeous place above and below the sea, so great to see it in a movie.

I'd forgotten, or maybe never knew, that Donna Summer sang "Theme from 'The Deep' (Down, Deep Inside)" for this movie. There's only a snippet of it within the movie, and an instrumental version plays over the end credits. It's like discovering a real treasure from the 70's disco era that you never knew existed. I live for rediscovering lost pop culture things like this." -Letterboxd
