1927 Press Photo J.E. Carroll invents new brake system for airplanes - nei12591
This is an original press photo. New brakes for airplanes invented -- Airplanes may now have brakes allowing them to stop in twice their own length, if they are equipped with this new invention just exhibited in Los Angeles by J.E. Carroll. A small motor fitted on the center of the propellor and regulated by the pilot from the cockpit, turns the blades of the propellor to any desired pitch while flying, and when landing reverses the blades completely. The reversed blades, according to the inventor, "push" against the air instead of drawing it in, forming a cushion that stops the plane quickly without danger of nosing over. Ability to change the angle of the blades in midair gives the pilot increased safety when through air pockets or in rarified atmosphere. The inventor is shown here tightening the new air brake. The small motor and gears that regulate the pitch of the propellors are shown here. In actual operation they are covered by a metal cap.Photo measures 6.5 x 8.5inches. Photo is dated 05-05-1927.
