Description: Japanese late Edo period pre 1880 “ISE KATAGAMI” for dying textiles “KATAGAMI”. These stencils are made from the bark of the mulberry tree and then treated with the juice of just ripened persimmons which make the paper strong and resistant to water. These beautiful ISE KATAGAMI from the Ise area in central Japan have no silk lining, unlike most katagami. Their designs have to be self-supporting please note that there are the different thickness of paper used.
