Mulberry Polychrome Transferware

Set of 5 Miniature Dolls Dinner Set Plates

FISHERS

Cork, Edge & Malkin Staffordshire England c. 1850

This playful set of 5 miniature toy dinner set plates is a stunning and scarce transferware set, circa 1850. Originally part of a complete miniature childrens dinner service or antique dollhouse accessory, the three tiny plates each measure 2-3/4 inches across and the two larger plates measures 3-7/8 inches. Transfer printed in a brilliant dark purple or mulberry with hand painted underglaze clobbering in blue green and gold.

The doll set is decorated in the scarce FISHERS pattern, depicting a boy and girl sitting by the side of a river with their fishing poles and bait, cows grazing near a bridge in the distance. The inside rim is embellished with a guilloche chain of circles and a stylized fleur de lis.

The set is marked with the letter G and some pieces include pattern name FISHERS and initials of the maker Cork, Edge Malkin & Co., a 19th century pottery manufactory in the Staffordshire region of England. The pattern is discussed in Doris Lechler's English Toy China as well as Lorraine Punchard's Playtime Pottery and Porcelain from the UK and US.

The set is in very good overall condition. One tiny plate and one larger plate have a fine hairline crack which doesn't distract from the set, and no other chips cracks or repairs. Minor typical firing imperfections consistent with age. Not fine pottery and not intended to be. made by child's play and probably considered disposble. These tiny childrens or dolls plates are like pocket size works of art. A sweet example, and perfect little set for a doll house dining room. Especially desirable in this colorful motif. Animal lovers adore the pattern! Sold as is.
